The Bimeda sponsored Irish Charollais Sheep Society 26th Premier Show and Sale was held on Saturday 25th July at Tullow Mart. Mr. David Mawhinney, Rockvilla flock Northern Ireland and Chairman of the British Charollais Sheep Society had the uneveniable job of judging.
224 sheep were catalogued for the sale but only 204 were offered for sale. The trade reflected the current trade for commercial lambs, prices were back on last year. The sale averaged €688 with ram lambs back the most, on average of €150 a head on last year to €650. Clearance was back 10% to 60%. Would this be a reflection that the numbers of ewes lambing in December/January for the Easter trade is reduced? When the commercial trade is weak it is reflected in all sectors.
The first event of the day was the judging with the hogget ewes. Jim and Frampton Jeffery, Midleton, Co. Cork took the red and blue rossettes wth the first prize hogget, a daughter of Logie Durno Navigator going on to claim the title of Reserve Supreme sheep of the day. This stylish correct hogget was sold for €750. Her flock mate in second place by Bawnard the Beast sold for €540 to Co. Kilkenny breeder Damien Aylward. Sarah O’Neill, Camolin Co. Wexford third placed unsold hogget is sired by Bolinaspect Boxer. The hogget ewes averaged €407, less than last year.
David Berry, an up and coming young breeder from Co. Kildare exhibited the winning ewe lamb. This lady is sired by Carriganeela Cracker and sold for €1,050. Second place went to Eamonn Quinlivan, Tulla, Co. Clare with a daughter of Carnew Navigator selling for €780 to Co. Cork breeders Noel and Andrew Hume. A Logie Durno Jackpot daughter bred by The Miley Family, Knockcroghery, Co. Roscommon took third prize and was sold for €500. Ewe lambs averaged €490.
It was now the turn of the males to take the yard wit the hogget ram class up first. The Jeffery brothers took the first and third places with two hoggets sired by Logie Durno Real McCoy, first prize winner sold for €1,640 while the third prize winner sold for €2,000 to Tuam based breeder David O’Gorman. Eamonn Quinlivan was again in second place with a son of Beechview Knockout which sold for €1,000 to Trevor Donaghy, Co. Sligo. The hogget rams sold to an average of €725.
The final and biggest class of the day was the ram lamb class, which was won for the fifth time by Co. Tipperary father and son Eddie and Paul O’Gorman, Ballyporeen. This son of Knockcroghery Constable who displayed fine breed characteristics went on to claim the title of Supreme Champion of the day. He was later sold to Co. Cork breeders Eddie and Sheena McCarthy for €2,600. The Jeffery Brothers were again in the blue position with a son of Cortoon Nifty Ned who pipped the supreme to take top price of the day at €2850. He was purchased by Kilkenny breeder James Murphy, Inistioge. The yellow rosette of third place went to Albert Ferguson, White’s Cross, Co. Cork with a son of Glynn Coch Ogi Ogi Ogi who was unsold. To put the icing on the cake for young David Berry his one and only entered ram lamb achieved third highest price €1850, a son of Carriganeela Cracker selling to Co. Cork breeder Eric Landen.
